Five months after what seemed like a surefire Grand Tour victory slipped through his fingers, Isaac del Toro has shed some light on what was going behind the scenes as UAE Team Emirates-XRG committed a huge tactical blunder at the Giro d'Italia.

As the 21-year-old Mexican climber told GCN Español, his directors did not remind him until it was already too late that Simon Yates had Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Wout van Aert waiting for him up the road on stage 20, which would prove to be decisive in the day's dramatic GC shakeup.
"Due to the stressful situation, I forgot that there was a rider, Van Aert, up the road, and in the moment, the car didn't tell me," Del Toro said.
