What to expect: Could a third straight day go to the sprinters? The late Montemagno climb does not look all that hard, so the fast finishers could get yet another chance when the race arrives in Lucca.
Dane’s picks: Stage 5 looks only slightly trickier than stage 4, and it will still be Jonathan Milan’s to lose. He came into the Giro as the sprinting favorite and he showed off some serious power on Tuesday. Plus, he probably won’t mind at least a little bit of lumpiness on the day. He is a deserving bookies’ favorite for stage 5 and a strong pick for Escape Collective fantasy players. Stage 3 winner Tim Merlier, stage 4 runner-up Kaden Groves, and Olav Kooij are the best of the rest, with Phil Bauhaus, Caleb Ewan, and Fabio Jakobsen potentially in the mix as well. All that said, fantasy cycling fans might keep in mind that there is at least some risk to picking any of the above sprinters for stage 5 given the hillier profile, but it’s probably a risk worth taking.
