Stage type: Time trial

What to expect: One week after the first TT comes the second, a 31.2 km affair in Lombardy. The course should suit the specialists, which could also mean that any of the purer climbers hoping to be in the mix for pink could ship quite a bit of time when all is said and done.

Fantasy favorites: Filippo Ganna and Tadej Pogačar are the two favorites again for the time trial, and unlike on stage 7, Ganna may have the edge. For one thing, this is a flatter course where Pogačar’s climbing legs won’t be as valuable. For another, it would stand to reason for Pogačar to ride a bit more conservatively now that he has such a lead – although that’s not exactly his style is it? Other contenders include Magnus Sheffield, Thymen Arensman, and Geraint Thomas.
