At least they tried

Richard Carapaz came closest to bringing the fight to Tadej Pogačar today. And even that wasn't enough.

The question hovering over the Tour de France is what options are left. With Tadej Pogačar seemingly hell-bent on winning everything, at the slightest provocation, the question that hovers just out of sight is: What can you do to beat that?

For a while, it looked like Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) had cracked the formula. Just after the catch of the lone surviving breakaway rider, Movistar’s Javier Romo, there was a surge from Carapaz and then he was away, throwing his bike back and forth in a limber side-to-side out of the saddle. The gap that grew out was, at first, hard-won, and then came in a rush. By the top of the Pas de Peyrol, it was looking like this might be the winning move.
