Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) took his first Grand Tour win since 2021 under unusual circumstances on Tuesday as Vuelta a España organizers decided to shift the stage 16 finish line to a climb 8 km from the original finish due to pro-Palestinian protests.
Bernal was off the front with Mikel Landa (Soudal-Quick Step) on the lumpy stage in Galicia when race officials made the call to alter the route and put the day's finish line only a little ways ahead of the two leaders. Bernal took a convincing win, his first at the WorldTour level since before the 2022 crash that derailed his career, in the uphill sprint to the improvised finish line. Brieuc Rolland (Groupama-FDJ) took third on the day seven seconds later.
