South Australian prosecutors have confirmed the charges levelled at former professional racer Rohan Dennis following his alleged role in the death of his wife, Mel Hoskins, in late 2023.
In a hearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday, prosecutor Talia Costi confirmed that police would pursue charges of causing death by dangerous driving and driving without due care.
Police allege that Dennis struck Hoskins with a car on the evening of December 30, outside their family home in Medindie, in Adelaide’s inner north. Hoskins was taken to hospital but died later that night.
Dennis reportedly stood quietly throughout Tuesday’s court proceedings and left without making a comment to the media. His latest court appearance comes roughly five months after his first, where prosecutors requested an adjournment to complete a major reconstruction of the crash that ultimately claimed Hoskins’ life. Dennis has been on bail since.
Dennis, now 34, retired at the end of 2023 after a career that included two time trial world titles, stage wins in all three Grand Tours, and a bronze medal in the time trial at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. He will return to court on October 30 to answer the charges levelled against him. The charge of causing death by dangerous driving is a major indictable offence and carries a maximum prison term of 15 years.
