Elite racing is back on Zwift after a several-month hiatus

With smart trainer accuracy issues reportedly resolved, the Zwift Games 2025 can now go ahead.

Escape's esports reporter Chris Schwenker returns this week with a look at why Zwift cancelled its elite racing in late 2024, what's changed in the months since, and what's in store for the upcoming Zwift Games 2025.

In December 2024, Zwift abruptly pulled the plug on elite racing in a bold and unexpected move, reportedly to contain the fallout from smart trainer accuracy issues and high-profile racer annulments. Now, after just a few months, several hardware fixes, and key ruleset changes , elite racing is back. Zwift has confirmed that its marquee event, the Zwift Games, will return in March 2025.

In a recent email shared with Escape Collective, Zwift confirmed the official greenlighting of its flagship racing series, the Zwift Games. The decision follows collaboration with racers, hardware manufacturers, and its independent performance verification team to address the smart trainer accuracy issues that put a halt to all platform-sanctioned elite racing. Zwift has also introduced ruleset clarifications to mitigate the disproportionate impact on athletes when infractions occur beyond their control, when there's no suspicion of foul play.

But what has changed since Zwift pulled the plug on elite racing back in December, clearing the way for a triumphant return?
