Lidl-Trek worked throughout the opening to stage of the Giro d'Italia to keep the race under control and set Mads Pedersen up for a shot at the win, and the Dane delivered in the Albanian capital of Tirana.
Launching his sprint some 250 meters from the finish line, Pedersen narrowly held off Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) to get the stage 1 victory and the maglia rosa. Orluis Aular (Movistar) took third on the day.
