April was a turbulent month for the US bike industry. Just weeks after President Trump’s sweeping tariffs hit key suppliers like Taiwan, Vietnam and China, US bike brands are already reporting paused shipments, price hikes or surcharges, and growing uncertainty.
Now, the industry’s main trade association, PeopleForBikes, is preparing to send a formal letter to president Trump requesting tariff relief or a reinstated exclusion process for a broad range of products including bicycles, components, e-bikes, helmets, apparel, and accessories.
"We urge the administration to give our businesses the runway they need to compete globally, invest domestically, and keep biking safe, affordable, and accessible," said Jenn Dice, CEO of PeopleForBikes, in a press release.
The press release and letter, signed by almost three dozen brands including Trek, Shimano and SRAM, were originally dated April 29, but mere days later PeopleForBikes said it "paused the sending of the letter to give industry members more time to sign in agreement."
