Three years ago, Shimano's Auto Shift introduced an automatic shifting option to both utility riding and mountain biking. But that system is specific to e-bikes. A new system announced today, called Q'Auto, brings similar technology to conventional, pedal-only bikes – mainly urban/utility models but with options for use in disciplines like gravel. But it's also a throwback of sorts to a much earlier attempt at automatic shifting.
Shimano's Coasting group debuted in 2007, accompanied by the rollout of stylish urban bikes from major brands featuring the all-new system, and a splashy launch that touted Shimano's collaboration with renowned design firm IDEO in creating the group. By contrast, the rollout of Q'Auto is significantly more subdued, largely building on existing technology and with only a few original-equipment partners at launch.
