The Critérium du Dauphiné is getting a new name and it's a mouthful

Out: history. In: a geographically correct but uninspiring re-brand.

The 2025 Critérium du Dauphiné was, as it turns out, the final edition of the storied race under that name. After almost 80 years of flying the proverbial flag for the region of southeastern France known as the Dauphiné, the race is getting a new moniker.

Starting in 2026, the sport's premier tune-up race for the Tour de France will be the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

It's ... a mouthful to be sure. The ASO, which organizes the event, announced the news on Monday with a press release featuring a few quotes attempting to explain the name change.
