The UCI's announcement last week of new equipment rules in elite road racing set off a furious debate. There was criticism that the rules unfairly penalized smaller riders, in particular women. There were questions how the industry would respond to the new rules. And finally, there were questions about how all this would actually work.
The UCI attempted to address that with a new statement on Friday. But the missive raises fresh questions even as it answers existing ones, and based on the new measurement specifications, it could essentially make a broad range of current handlebars illegal for UCI use.
