'Better safe than sorry' – Vingegaard masked up at Tour stage 2 start
You'd be forgiven for mistaking images from the start of Sunday's stage 2 for being several years old as Jonas Vingegaard appeared in Tarragona wearing a face mask. But this was not the spectre of the Covid-19 pandemic; Vingegaard is merely taking ever last precaution to avoid illness as he seeks to defend the yellow jersey at the 2026 Tour de France.
"There's a few things behind it. It's not that I have any problem," Vingegaard said at the start. "It's more that I hear already that there's some sickness in some teams and I've had a history of being sick in my last two Grand Tours, so as you said: 'Better safe than sorry.'"
