Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) delivered on his favorite status in the stage 16 time trial at the Tour de France, powering to a convincing win in Thonon-les-Bains. The world time trial champion completed the 26.1 km course in 32:19, 28 seconds faster than second-placed Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), who was the only rider within a minute of Evenepoel.
Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) finished third on the day, 1:04 down.
Unfortunately for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, Evenepoel's win was not the only big news of the day for the team, as Florian Lipowitz, who started the stage in fifth overall, crashed heavily in a corner and then abandoned the race.
Heading into Wednesday's stage 17, Pogačar remains in the race lead with a slightly reduced gap of 4:32 to Evenepoel in second overall.
