Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) delivered on his status as the time trial favorite to win stage 5 of the Tour de France as Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) put in a stellar showing of his own, taking second place on the day and surging into the overall race lead.

After besting Pogačar in the time trial at the Critérium du Dauphiné, Jonas Vingegaard had hoped to do so again in the Tour and maybe contend for the stage win, but the Dane was not even the fastest or second-fastest Visma-Lease a Bike rider on the day. Crossing the line well behind third-place finisher Edoardo Affini and fellow teammate Matteo Jorgenson as well, Vingegaard could only manage 13th place, shipping 1:15 to Pogačar.

Pogačar started the day in polka dots but he ended it in yellow, and in fact he now leads every classification for which he is eligible.
