It won't be too long before we're announcing the winners of the 10th annual Mark Gunter Photo Awards. For four weeks through December and January, cycling photographers from around the world sent in their best photos to be considered by our panel of judges. And there were many amazing images to consider. Action shots, rider profiles, the most amazing scenery you're likely to find – it was all there.
Before the judges reveal the overall winners, let's take a look at the photos that were shortlisted in the Amateur and Smartphone categories, arranged by which judge shortlisted them.
As you'll see, there's certainly some overlap, but there's also plenty of variety. Stay posted to Escape to see which photos ended up taking out the competition!
Leon van Bon
Léon van Bon is living proof that the eye of a cyclist can become the eye of a photographer. Son of a teaching filmmaker with a celebrated career as a professional rider, he raced Classics, Grand Tours, and won Olympic silver in Barcelona.
His photography carries the same intuition he once used to read a race: timing, tension, and raw emotion. As winner of the 2024 Mark Gunter Photo Awards, Léon returns this year as a judge bringing humility, insight, and deep respect for the many beauties of cycling.
