The only road stage of the Tour de France without a single KOM point on offer came close to being spoilt for the sprinters by the Alpecin-Deceuninck duo of Jonas Rickaert and Mathieu van der Poel, but after a frantic run-in that diminished the depth of many of the sprint teams, Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) did what he does best to take his second stage win of the Tour ahead of Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) and a resurgent Arnaud de Lie (Lotto).
The GC riders had a more stressful day out than they might have anticipated thanks again to crosswinds, but though Oscar Onley (Picnic-PostNL) suffered a bit of a scare 70 km out, the race's GC contenders all came through relatively unscathed – all except UAE Team Emirates-XRG's injured domestique-cum-GC rider João Almeida who was forced to abandon two days after his stage 7 crash.
