Movistar's Rubio DNFs Tour after crashing into UAE team car
Einer Rubio's Tour de France hit an abrupt end on stage 19 when the Spanish rider's ascent of Alpe d'Huez was brought to a rude and violent stop by the UAE Team Emirates-XRG car.
The team car had to stop suddenly due to fan interference on the climb, and Rubio, just behind, smashed into the back hatch at full speed. The Colombian climber was immediately in distress, with photos from the scene later showing a significant amount of blood on the road. He did not finish the stage and his condition as of publication is unknown.
Pre-stage, riders and directors had voiced concerns about the massive and unruly crowds on Alpe d'Huez. Numerous riders were wary of fan interference, and while there are no initial indications that there was anything intentional in the Rubio incident, it matters little to him since the outcome is the same.
