Route summary: The massive elevation gain says it all. The Tour peloton will tackle three HC climbs – and a Cat 1. as well – on a stage 20 that ascends to the highest point in this year's Tour at 2,642 meters above sea level.

With the interminable Col de la Croix de Fer wearing away the field early, the Col du Télégraphe and Col du Galibier will be all the more challenging. The Col de Sarenne – aka the backside ascent to Alpe d'Huez – looks like a fine launching pad for a late attack with some up-and-down roads en route to the finish, which is not actually a categorized climb.
