UAE Team Emirates-XRG will be celebrating a breakaway stage win for Jay Vine but ruing the end of Juan Ayuso's GC aspirations after Thursday's first mountain stage of the Vuelta a España.

Climbing in the mountains of Andorra, Vine left his breakaway companions behind going over the Alto de La Comella some 20 km from the finish of stage 6, and the Australian held on to claim a clear victory atop the Cat. 1 finishing climb to Pal. Torstein Træen (Bahrain Victorious) took second and also secured the race leader's red jersey, while Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS-Astana) took third on the day.

Back in the group of overall contenders, Ayuso found himself in trouble with 5 km still to go and was dropped shortly thereafter. Despite a brief foray off the front of the group by Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), most – though not all – of the rest of the GC headliners finished together.
