At the end of stage 4 in Rouen, Jonas Vingegaard said how he'd "got his shit together and closed the gap" to Tadej Pogačar up the Rampe Saint Hilaire to ensure that only bonus seconds would continue to separate them.

24 hours later, and the mood at Visma-Lease a Bike was somewhat more deflated, after Tadej Pogačar had put more than a minute into his Tour de France rival.

"I just didn't have the legs," Vingegaard said post-stage, now fourth overall, 1:13 down on Pogačar. "I lost a bit of time, but my legs didn't feel good. So the result reflects the feeling in my legs. I was fighting my legs and my bike. I was surprised by my legs, but sometimes that's part of cycling."
