It might be the biggest story of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift so far. Demi Vollering’s nasty crash on stage 3 which left the 2023 champion bruised and battered.
That crash and the aftermath has sparked a war of words between rival managers. On one side, Vollering’s boss at FDJ-Suez, Stephen Delcourt, who spoke publicly about how Vollering’s crash was evidence of an apparent lack of respect in the bunch. On the other side, Visma-Lease a Bike’s Jos van Emden who called Delcourt’s suggestions “completely ridiculous” and said that Delcourt had “just been influenced by Demi – by her dramatic behaviour."
"Demi really thinks she’s in a golden cage,” Van Emden continued. “Sure, she’s the best rider. But that doesn’t mean everyone has to move aside for her.”
This stoush between managers adds some drama and intrigue to an already engaging story, but let’s not forget the most important part of this whole discussion: How is Vollering doing? And in terms of the actual bike race: what does Vollering’s nasty fall mean for her chances of contesting the GC as planned?
