Oscar Onley is officially out of Tour with shoulder injury

Oscar Onley will not race the Tour de France this year, his Ineos-Netcompany made official on Thursday.

The 23-year-old, who finished 4th at last year's Tour, crashed in the Tour of Auvergne Rhone Alps (formerly Dauphiné) a week and a half ago and suffered a significant shoulder injury. He flew into a ravine on a descent during stage 6 and was caught in a tree prior to rescue.

Onley completed some Tour recon rides but his participation in this Tour was always in doubt, and medical imaging showed a "significant shoulder injury" which he has not yet recovered from.

"I’m gutted not to be able to line up for the Tour de France this year," Onley said in the team's statement. "My focus is now on recovering and getting my shoulder in a good place, but I’m really motivated to try and make something out of this season."

Kevin Vauquelin is now expected to lead Ineos at the Tour, though he too has had a less-than-perfect lead-up to the race. He pulled out of the French road and time trial national championships, citing illness he picked up at Auvergne.
