Pogačar can't help himself

The four-time Tour champion increased his stage win tally to 22 at Les Angles, getting his name on the board earlier than ever at a Tour de France.

It wasn’t so long ago that the world was lamenting the relative weakness of Tadej Pogačar’s support going into a Tour de France defence, and wondering just what the young phenom might be able to do if only he had a team worthy of his talent. Well, by now we know the answer:

Win as much and as often as possible.

Stage 3 of the 2026 Tour was meant to be a day for the breakaway – as much as any stage is predetermined these days. It got off to a fiery start as a result, taking over an hour for 18 riders to finally form up off the front. They found themselves a maximum of about three minutes by around the halfway mark, the speed with which the gap had ballooned enough to cultivate at least a little optimism in the lead group.
