The Tour de France is underway, and while much of the early focus has centred on why chainrings don't cause crashes, illegal bikes, and a new Merida aero bike, there’s plenty of other tech to dive into as well.
On Thursday evening, I roamed the team buses at the pre-race presentation, hunting for nerdy details and interesting setups. Most teams used spare bikes for the ceremonial event, but even those offered some revealing insights.
Friday was spent at the team hotel shared by Visma-Lease a Bike, Lidl-Trek, and Intermarché-Wanty. That turned up an unexpected early look at what appears to be Jonas Vingegaard’s Cervelo P5 TT bike we believe he will race for the mountain time trial on stage 16 where most others seem set to race road bikes. But that wasn’t the only new equipment on show.
That’s where we’ll begin this first instalment of our Tour de France tech series.
