Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) won the stage 18 time trial at the Vuelta a España by less than a second on Thursday, narrowly besting Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) in Valladolid. Ganna completed the flat 12.2 km course, which was shortened from an originally planned distance of 27.2 km, in 13 minutes flat. That made for a blistering average speed of 56 kilometers per hour.
Vine's teammate João Almeida finished third on the day, eight seconds behind Ganna – but 10 seconds ahead of race leader Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike). Almeida is therefore just 40 seconds off the race lead with three stages to go.
