João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) made a statement en route to his first ever Vuelta a España stage win on Friday, holding off race leader Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) at the summit finish line of the Alto de l'Angliru to win stage 13.

Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) secured third on the day.

As might have been expected on what Almeida said could be "the hardest climb in the world," several notables arrived well behind the stage winner. After picking up a few bonus seconds at the line and moving up ever-so-slightly in the overall standings, Almeida is now the only rider within two minutes of Vingegaard in the general classification at 46 seconds back.
