Sports and fitness electronics giant Garmin has bought two major sports training platforms, amounting to a decisive move into the training software space, but leaving open the question of what happens to the many separate subscriptions now sitting under one roof. The company announced on Wednesday that it has acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic, bringing 120 staff from the two Louisville, Colorado-based businesses into its 23,000-strong headcount.
TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic were previously owned by Peaksware Holdings, a Boulder-based company. TrainingPeaks was founded in 1999 by Gear Fisher and Dirk Friel, and Andy Stephens joined the team as a funding partner in 2007 and became the CEO of the group in 2014. TrainHeroic – a strength training-focused app – joined the group alongside music-software MakeMusic and Alfred Music.
"TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic share Garmin's passion for empowering athletes and coaches around the world with world-class training tools, performance metrics and actionable insights," said Brad Trenkle, Garmin co-CEO, in the announcement. In the same release, TrainingPeaks' Stephens described the acquisition as an extension of more than a decade-old partnership: TrainingPeaks workouts already sync to compatible Garmin devices, and health data from Garmin wearables flows back into TrainingPeaks.
