After more than two weeks of frustration as he kept coming up short in the sprints, Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) won a thrilling stage 17 of the Tour de France on Wednesday in Voiron.
The 28-year-old Belgian made it into a big breakaway move that featured many of the fastest finishers in the race. Constant attacks off the front made for an action-packed day but the larger breakaway group brought things back together for a sprint, which Philipsen won convincingly ahead of Mauro Schmid (Jayco-AlUla) and Olav Kooij (Decathlon-CMA CGM).
Nearly nine minutes behind Philipsen, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and the other GC riders arrived safely together to the finish line with no changes at the top of the overall standings.
